On the Swahili Coast

Just South of Somalia, in the Northern coastal regions of Kenya, lies an archipelago. This is where, according to Richard Francis Burton, “[…] a symphony of sails and sands, where the whispers of ancient traders linger in the ocean breeze.” Lamu Island is among them, and a place unbothered by the passing of time. Sounds and sights along the island feel eternal even today. From the sloshes of the dhows to the ethereal calls to prayer; one feels a connection to an ancient world, lost to most of the African coast.

Maulid Festival attendees gather at the Mashid Riadhwa Mosque in Lamu’s old town.
