Coming Soon: As far East as East goes

  • ‘As far East as East Goes’ is a journey and will start from my Hometown in Utrecht. Together with my wife, we will venture from Utrecht in the Netherlands by train along a modern-day orient express.
  • Vienna to Budapest, on to Bucharest and Sofia. Crossing the Bosporus in Istanbul from Europe to Asia and continue along the old train routes toward Iran.
  • Before crossing, we will turn North along the Iranian and Armenian borders past Mount Ararat into the former Soviet republics of Georgia and Azerbaijan.
  • Attempt to cross the Caspian Sea toward Aktau in Kazakhstan. From there we aim to rattle along the old Soviet railway system before connecting to the old Silk Road routes in Uzbekistan.
  • Through the deserts and mountainous plains of Central Asia, finally crossing into Kashgar in modern-day China.
  • Turning South, past the Stone city of Tashkurgan crossing over the Khunjerab Pass into Pakistan, travelling through the endless greens of the Hunza valley.
  • Crossing over the recently opened land border between Pakistan and India, to jolt forward along the foot of the Indian Himalayas.
  • Through the Himalaya’s onward into Tibet, and then turn East once more.
  • The route is roughly planned, we have a general direction, and only one rule: no aeroplanes. By train, and where trains won’t go, cars, busses, horses and motorbikes.
  • The slowness of trains will hopefully allow a journey watched through a window to the world.
